The Digital Streaming Paradox

Limited Time & Limitless Options

The Problem

How does it feel when you sit down after a long day and can not decide what to watch? It’s frustrating that just as we choose to relax we are stressed by the thing we most rely on to enjoy our precious time at the end of a busy day. As we continue to be immersed in a digitally driven world we are faced with many more decisions and options than in the past. As our options continue to increase, we are inundated with stressors that come with too many choices. Backed by research on decision making, emotions, habits, and projected digital trends, this project presents a reimagining of the popular streaming platform, Prime Video.

The Solution

Our design solution focused on a redesign of Amazon Prime Video and drives home the importance of less is more, customization, and a personalized experience that improves overall usability. By focusing on these themes, and implementing more of what people love, like niche genres and hiding content, we improve users mental health by eliminating stressors. While these were implemented for Prime Video, the solution and design features can and should be considered for implementation in other streaming services.

Our Approach

We started this process by confirming our problem using a broad survey. After identifying key themes through research on emotions, habits, decision making, and stressors, we completed a competitive analysis to understand where the gaps in the market were and used these findings to further hone in on our problem by cross referencing information gathered from roundtables and a second in depth survey. After categorizing our findings we then were able to identify pain points and used these points to create our insight statements. We then created design principles to drive our solution. Each of our individual solutions fall under four principles. Below these principals are listed with a screen shot of the design implemented.

Not Overwhelm Users

A way to choose and customize homepage suggestion categories to cut down on the amount of information presented to the users and lessen overwhelmingness. In the photo to the left you can see that the customization would take place in the users profile and we have included three customization options: Home Screen Categories, Category Generator, and Playlists.

Earn Users Trust

An added ‘Explore’ feature to subtly implement intention in users streaming habits, and efficiently find tailored suggested content to earn users trust. This quiz-like pathway requires users to think intentionally through the implementation of steps taken to find content. By providing tailored choices upfront as well as over time, this feature will increase positive emotions by earning trust and therefore create lasting habits while navigating streaming services.

Provide Tailored Choices

A likert-style rating system to provide users with similar recommendations and allow them to continue curating their recommendations over time. Currently, Prime Video does not provide a quick and easy way for viewers to rate what they’ve watched, additionally, the ratings they are shown are pulled from IMDb and are not reflective of individual user preferences.

Help Users Contribute To Their Own Experience

The option to create playlists to further support users own contribution to their streaming experience. By providing more customization aspects, such as custom playlists and categories, and options to remove or hide features and content we help users recognize and contribute to their personalized experience.

What I Learned

This project really taught me how to implement the human centered design process from start to finish. It allowed me to utilize many skills including primary and secondary research, interviews, roundtables, surveys, ideation, and high-fidelity prototyping. Deciding to complete my thesis with a partner also allowed me to better understand nuances that come from working with others on a project from inception all the way through the end.

My Favorite Part

I really enjoyed getting to dive deeper into Figma to create a high-fi clickable prototype! Getting to see our vision come to life was incredibly rewarding! I really enjoy the technical side of processes as well as the artistic.
